Introduction

The present study aims at the systematic recording, grouping by ode and alphabetical order, and statistical analysis of all distinct irmi (Irmos (Greek: εἱρμός, plural: Irmi), the melodic and metrical model hymn of each ode) employed in the odes of the canons of the Menaion. The Menaion is one of the most significant liturgical books of the Orthodox Church, as it contains, for each day of the year, the services of the fixed feasts and the commemorated saints. It is commonly encountered as a collection of twelve volumes, one for each month, in which, for every day of the month, the hymns prescribed to be chanted at Vespers and Orthros (Orthros: Matins) that particular date are presented, among other information.

These data remain unchanged from year to year. Thus, two dates corresponding to the same day within the same month but belonging to different years have exactly the same service in the Menaion, unless an intervening newer edition of the Menaion has introduced modifications by the publisher, which is not uncommon. In several cases, information concerning the typikon and the order of the liturgical services is also included. The Menaion may therefore be characterized as an extensive annual ecclesiastical calendar, the total volume of which exceeds 4,000 densely printed pages. During certain periods of the liturgical year, however, when movable feasts prevail—most notably Pascha—the services of the Menaion may be omitted or celebrated only partially.

The focus of the research on the canons of the Menaion

One of the fundamental elements contained in the Menaion is the canon or the canons appointed to be chanted at Orthros for each day of the year. A canon consists of a collection of troparia, that is, short hymns, which are organized into eight odes, each of which typically comprises four or more troparia. The principal feature distinguishing one ode from the others lies in the fact that the poetic text of all its troparia has been composed in such a way that they are chanted according to the same predefined melody, known as the “Irmos” (Plural: Irmi), as already mentioned.

The title of the irmos is indicated at the head of each ode and functions as a melodic model for the performance of the troparia that follow. The irmos itself is likewise a troparion belonging to an ode of a specific canon; however, as a troparion, it does not necessarily form part of the troparia of the particular ode whose melodic line it defines. In the image below, the notation of the irmos prior to the beginning of the troparia is shown.

References to the odes of a canon are made using the ancient Greek numeral system, employing lowercase letters of the Greek alphabet: α΄ for the first, γ΄ for the third, δ΄ for the fourth, ε΄ for the fifth, στ΄ for the sixth (also encountered as ς΄), ζ΄ for the seventh, η΄ for the eighth, and θ΄ for the ninth. The second ode (β΄) is not included in the canons of the usual liturgical practice. Consequently, each canon ultimately consists of eight odes, despite the fact that their numbering extends to the ninth.

Nature of the results

The final outcome was not limited to the mere determination of the “magic number” representing the total count of distinct irmi; rather, additional noteworthy data and measurements were derived and are presented subsequently. A further benefit concerns the support of the hymnological performance of all odes across all canons contained in this liturgical book. Beyond the presentation of an extensive list of irmos titles, further significant information is provided, such as the tone (or echos, which is one of the eight melodic paths of the byzantine music) of each irmos, references to corresponding audio recordings, and the frequency of occurrence of each irmos within the Menaion.

Thus, in addition to the statistical value inherent in such an in-depth analysis of the entire corpus of the Menaion, the present investigation may also serve as a practical tool for students of the psaltic art, enabling them to organize their studies and to establish priorities in their engagement with the hymnological material of the Menaion.

Prevailing practices at the chant stand

During the orthros of Sunday, the first and third odes from the canons contained in the Menaion are chanted, in addition, of course, to the Resurrection Canon of the Sunday Orthros of the appointed tone (echos, ήχος). This practice implies that the chanter is required to be familiar at least with the irmi of these odes of the Menaion.

Saturdays and weekdays

In the services of weekdays (including Saturday), the practice concerning the odes to be chanted becomes more complex. In addition to the first and third odes, which may even be read rather than chanted, the irmos of the third ode of the final canon of the Menaion must be chanted. Furthermore, the irmos of the sixth ode of the final canon is also chanted when more than one canon is prescribed for that day. Subsequently, the irmos of the final canon is chanted for both the eighth and the ninth odes.

What, then, is the number of irmi that a chanter should ideally know in order to meet the hymnological demands of any given day of the year? This question is essentially reduced to the following: How many distinct irmi are referenced in the Menaion? Even in the most straightforward case of the Sunday service, familiarity with the melodies of the irmi of the first and third odes is required. For weekdays, however, additional knowledge of the irmi of the sixth, eighth, and ninth odes of the final canon appointed for the given day in the Menaion is necessary. Accordingly, the results presented herein address each ode category separately.

Method of analysis

For the purposes of the present investigation, a manual recording of the irmi could have been undertaken, page by page, day by day, and month by month, followed by an equally manual organization of this information. Such an approach, however, would have been extremely time-consuming and would have entailed a substantial risk of inaccuracies resulting from inevitable human error in the course of such a labor-intensive process.

Instead, I have applied my own advanced programmatic data-analysis techniques, and algorithms specifically designed by me for this purpose were implemented, which in turn analyze digitized editions of the Menaion in order to derive reliable conclusions. In particular, the digitized version of the Menaion made available on the website glt.goarch.org (more widely known as “GREEK LITURGICAL TEXTS”) in the section “THE MENAIA” was selected.

There, for each day of each month, a reference is provided to a separate webpage which, for the selected date, contains the Menaion material for both Vespers and Orthros (both presented on the same page rather than separately). Through programs developed by the author (details here), the entirety of the digitized Menaion is downloaded to a local hard drive, the Vespers material is separated from the Orthros material, and these two collections, Vespers and Orthros per day, are subsequently made available as compressed ZIP archives. These archives may be downloaded and extracted both on mobile devices (Android) and on desktop computers.

Upon extraction of the file MHNAIO_ESPERINOS.zip, a directory named MHNAIO_ESPERINOS is created, containing twelve subdirectories, one for each month. Each subdirectory includes HTML files corresponding to the days of the respective month, each file containing the Vespers service of the day indicated by the (numerical-based) filename. For example, the file Jan_17.html contains the Vespers service for January 17. These files may be opened in any web browser; on Android devices, however, the preinstalled HTML Viewer constitutes a particularly suitable option.

Similarly, for the Orthros services of the days of the year, the file MHNAIO_OR8ROS.zip is provided, for which analogous considerations apply. In order to enhance the usefulness of each Orthros file, the Apolytikion - otherwise included only in the Vespers service - was added at the beginning.

Subsequently, another program, Main.java, reads the folders containing the digitized Menaion downloaded by the previous program and proceeds with the automatic reading, extraction, correction (indeed, certain corrections to the digitization were required), and organization of the canons according to feast date, feast title, ode numbering, irmos title, mode (echos), an indication of whether the ode belongs to the final canon or not, as well as the four- or five-digit audio code assigned by the “GREEK LITURGICAL TEXTS” website (as well as by other similar resources) for listening to the irmos (already provided as an online reference).

All 4,528 odes included in the edition of the Menaion available on this website were analyzed. Execution of the Java program produces a preliminary Excel-compatible file (in “.csv” format), which, with minimal processing in Excel, was converted into the file OdesMhnaiou.xlsx.

This file constitutes a detailed database containing all irmi of the year. It includes filters for each column, enabling users to refine and adapt the results according to their specific requirements.

A presentation of the conclusions follows. The total number of distinct irmi amounts to 402. At the end of this document, a table listing the titles of all these irmi is provided.

First and third odes

The table below records the irmi employed throughout the year exclusively for the first and third odes, in order to facilitate the performance of the corresponding odes irrespective of the day. As already noted, this table fully serves the needs of those who attend the chant stand only on Sundays or who choose not to chant beyond these two odes, for whom the information regarding the required irmi is therefore sufficient.

An alphabetical ordering based on the title of the irmos was applied to enable rapid retrieval. In total, 95 distinct irmi are required for the first and third odes. The first column contains a sequential index number per irmos. Many of the remaining columns are self-explanatory by virtue of their titles alone. In the column labeled APPEARANCES, the frequency of occurrence of each irmos throughout the year was calculated, always in accordance with the aforementioned digitized version of the Menaion. The AUDIO column provides a link for immediate playback of the corresponding audio recording (internet connection required).

Irmi of the sixth ode (of the final canon)

Assuming that there is also scholarly interest in the irmos of the sixth ode, the table presented here lists the irmi of the sixth ode exclusively for the final canon. That is, if the Menaion prescribes two canons for a given day, the irmos of the sixth ode of the second (final) canon is considered. In total, there are 37 distinct irmi of this type. The most frequently occurring irmos is - unsurprisingly - “Θύσω σοι μετά φωνής” with 64 occurrences throughout the year.

java-programs

The results were obtained by executing the programs DownloadMhnaio.java, SplitMhnaio.java και Main.java which I wrote in the Java programming language and I am providing them for anyone interested who would like to either study how they work or repeat the entire process from "scratch" themselves, possibly making extensions to their functionality. These are files that can be opened and edited in any text editor, such as Windows Notepad. Of course, even for an as-is re-run of the process, some experience in managing source code files such as these is required. Compilation is done on the Windows (or any other operating system) command line using "javac", the standard java-compiler of Java 8. For the SplitMhnaio.java, the syntax should be as follows:

javac -encoding utf8 SplitMhnaio.java

and similarly for Main.java

javac -encoding utf8 Main.java

The execution is again done from the command line (e.g. java DownloadMhnaio). Within the DownloadMhnaio.java program which downloads all days of the month for all months, the download source can be specified, either https://imkorinthou.org or https://glt.goarch.org/ or any other source. Depending on the naming convention followed by the source, it may be necessary to change the way the (daily) file name is formed. As it is, it works perfectly for glt.goarch.org.

The Splithnaio.java program reads the previously downloaded files and creates a pair of folders where it "splits" the files into new ones, some that only concern Vespers and others only Matins.

Either after these are done or after the ready zip files that I announced above are decompressed, then the Main.java program takes over the entire analysis. Some changes should be made to file/folder paths within these programs so that there are no errors during their execution. Epilogue

I hope that the study has offered something to the theoretical researcher of the Menaion, but also to those who use it in practice. The Menaion has other aspects that need analysis. Other programs should be written that will "plow" all the remaining information, such as for the apolytikia, kathismata, hexapostelaria, and the other kind of hymns. The same should be done for the other ecclesiastical books. From time to time, a new study will be added to the page, possibly for other types of data.
